Hospitals in The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone face severe challenges due to unstable electrical infrastructure. Frequent power outages disrupt surgeries and critical treatments, putting patient lives at risk. Climate change is worsening these outages, while reliance on diesel generators—when available—brings high costs, dangerous emissions, and unreliable performance. These countries are among the most at risk for negative health outcomes associated with climate change. As climate-related power disruptions increase, the need for sustainable, safe, and cost-effective energy solutions for hospitals becomes urgent.
The program addresses these challenges by building clean, renewable solar energy systems at core hospitals in three countries. Working closely with local leaders and stakeholders, the program tailors each solar installation to meet the hospital’s long-term energy needs. A key component is training biomedical technicians to operate, maintain, and repair the solar infrastructure, and to mentor future technicians in their local communities. Once the systems are established, ownership is transitioned to the hospitals, ensuring sustainability.
With Takeda’s support, the program will benefit 635,000 people by providing continuous, uninterrupted power to hospitals that previously relied on only 40–50% reliable electricity. This consistent power supply enables hospitals to function effectively, enhances patient care, and ensures continuous service during extreme weather and climate disruptions. The solar infrastructure is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 800 metric tons annually and builds local capacity for long-term maintenance and resilience. Takeda’s contribution directly improves health outcomes and disaster preparedness in some of Africa’s most climate-vulnerable regions.
