Shatoya shares how living with psoriasis shaped her childhood, confidence, relationships and sense of self. Watch the 3-minute video to see how Shatoya reclaimed her confidence and refused to let psoriasis define her story.

For as long as she can remember, Shatoya has lived with psoriasis. Diagnosed as a child, she grew up navigating not only the physical symptoms, but also the emotional challenges that came with the disease. Misconceptions and stigma from classmates who believed she was contagious left her feeling isolated and self-conscious, leading her to avoid activities she once loved.

Looking back, Shatoya reflects, “Psoriasis used to hold me back, but it no longer does.”

Shatoya credits this mindset shift to the unwavering support from those closest to her, especially her sister, who reminds her, “This disease or illness does not define who you are.” That encouragement has become the message that Shatoya now shares with others in the psoriasis community: “Psoriasis is a part of our story, but it does not define us.”

Shatoya’s experience reflects an important reality of psoriasis. Although psoriasis is often recognized for its physical symptoms, it’s a chronic, systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease where physical symptoms may only be part of the experience.1-3 Living with a chronic, visible condition can influence a person’s everyday decisions, from what they wear to how comfortable they feel in social situations.1-3 It can also affect emotional well-being and self-esteem.1-3

“Psoriasis is far more than a skin condition and its effects can vary considerably from person to person. This disease can alter how people see themselves, interact with others and navigate everyday life. Listening to the psoriasis community as they share their stories can help us better understand the full patient experience with this complex, heterogeneous disease.”
