Our Commitment to the Planet

A healthier planet means healthier people. That’s why we act with urgency to minimize our environmental impact, developing sustainable solutions to improve public health and working with our peers and strategic partners to foster responsible innovation to protect the world in which we live.

We’re minimizing our environmental impact and progressing toward our sustainability goals.

Protect our Planet

We will harness our unique capabilities to deliver a high standard of environmental leadership that protects our planet’s natural systems and human health:

  • Design products with sustainability in mind.
  • Achieve our net-zero ambition.
  • Conserve natural resources.

Why it matters

A changing environment may impact patients across Takeda’s therapeutic areas. We're working to reduce our environmental impact, embedding environmental sustainability as early as our product development all the way to delivery while driving efficiency, cost savings and long-term business resilience.

Our programs and focus areas

Our commitment to environmental sustainability is embedded in our company vision: “Discover and deliver life-transforming treatments.” Our projects, actions and activities are structured around three areas: Climate, Nature and Product Sustainability.

Climate

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our operations and across our value chain.

At Takeda, taking action on climate is part of our commitment to improve both human and planetary health. To deliver, we focus on energy efficiency and low-emission technologies. We are increasing renewable energy sources at our own sites and purchasing renewable energy on a regional basis. We are also reducing indirect emissions (Scope 3) by engaging with our suppliers.

We have set ambitious, science-based targets, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):

  • By FY2030, we will reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions 65% from a FY2016 baseline and Scope 3 emissions 25% from a FY2022 baseline.
  • By FY2035, we will achieve net-zero emissions in our operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2).
  • By FY2040, we will achieve net-zero across our value chain (Scope 1-3).

Nature

Minimizing the environmental impacts of our operations and conserving natural resources.

Takeda’s commitment to natural resource conservation is focused on responsible water management, waste reduction and biodiversity protection.

  • By FY2030, we aim to achieve zero waste-to-landfill.
  • By FY2030, we will reduce our freshwater withdrawal by 10% from a FY2019 baseline.

Product Sustainability

Designing products and services to minimize their environmental impact through their life cycle.

Our Product Sustainability program aims to minimize our environmental footprint by incorporating sustainability principles during every stage of product development, from R&D through packaging and delivery to end-of-life. This includes applying life cycle assessments and green chemistry principles to reduce material use, energy demand and waste.

  • By FY2030, at least 95% of paper and fiberboard in secondary and tertiary product packaging (by weight) will be either recycled content or Forest Stewardship Council-certified.

Our progress toward environmental sustainability

External recognition

  • In 2024, the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated Takeda’s near- and long-term net-zero targets as being consistent with reductions required to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • We were honored to be included on CDP’s 2025 Climate A List for the fourth consecutive year, demonstrating environmental performance and transparency.
  • We received two WorldStar Global Packaging Awards from the World Packaging Organization for our pioneering use of bio-polyethylene (bio-PE) in pharmaceutical primary packaging and secondary packaging for pre-filled syringes.
  • We were recognized as Green Lease Leader for incorporating sustainability into our global leasing practices.
  • In 2025 we achieved 8 Green Building certifications including LEED Gold in India, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and the United States.

 Progress toward our goals

Climate

  • We have achieved a 58% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions since FY2016, exceeding our goal of 40%.
  • We have achieved a 10% reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions since FY2022.

Nature

  • We have achieved a 75% waste diversion from landfills.
  • We have achieved a 6% reduction in freshwater withdrawal since FY2019.

Product Sustainability

  • As of FY2025, 69% of the paper and fiberboard we use (by weight) comes from recycled or Forest Stewardship Council-certified sources.

To drive progress against our goals, we:

  • Initiated a global Climate Action Program at Sites (CAPS) that drives initiatives locally to reduce our GHG emissions, energy use and freshwater withdrawals.
  • Partnered with key suppliers to help them establish science-based carbon emissions reduction goals and take additional actions to reduce their emissions in line with the targets they set.
  • Support the Energize program, a collaboration between global pharmaceutical companies to engage their suppliers in bold climate action and decarbonization of the pharmaceutical value chain through renewable energy procurement.
  • Signed virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) advancing renewable energy production in the U.S. and EU.

Looking ahead

We’re proud of our progress, and we know there is more we need to do to deliver our ambitious environmental sustainability goals.

We aspire to build a sustainable future for patients, people and the planet. We’re taking action to reduce our environmental impacts throughout the life cycles of our products and through the way we work.

We’re improving our own ways of working, assisting our suppliers and partners in their commitments and efforts, partnering with technology and environmental experts as well as rallying people worldwide.
