Company Unveils Exhibit Commemorating African-American Contributions To Society

Deerfield, IL, February 9, 2017 –Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. today welcomed the recently-elected mayor of Baltimore and nationally-known political leader to its Chicagoland office. Mayor Cynthia Pugh spoke to an audience of Deerfield-based Takeda employees. Hundreds of employees were invited to learn about issues of concern in the African-American community as part of the company’s effort to help educate its own employees on diversity and inclusion topics impacting many communities in the U.S.

“We’re delighted to host Mayor Pugh during our celebration of Black History Month as an esteemed source of insight dedicated to promoting economic opportunity for African-Americans,” said Laurene Giagnorio, senior vice president, human resources and administration, Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. “Our continued commitment to our inclusive culture is a high priority and key to our success. Takeda’s award-winning workplace supports attraction and retention of the finest talent, determined to find innovative solutions for the patients we serve.”

Takeda has been recognized, Giagnorio explains, for its diversity and inclusion efforts. Since starting its program several years ago, Takeda has expanded its policies and programs to be even more inclusive. The company has established six employee resource groups (ERGs) which help validate company policies and programs to strengthen recruiting and retention efforts. The ERG focused on African-American employees is sponsoring Takeda’s Black History Month activities and invited Mayor Pugh given her prominent role as a leader in the African-American community.

Mayor Pugh was elected the 50th mayor of Baltimore in December, 2016. She has a long history of public service, serving in state and local government roles. In addition to her service in government, Mayor Pugh has been active in the Baltimore business community, working as a business owner, television and radio news reporter, banker, business developer and dean of a local business college, among other accomplishments. She also is an author of a series of children’s books encouraging exercise and healthy eating.

Further, she has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to diversity and inclusion by numerous local and national organizations, including the United States Small Business Advocate of the Year, the National Association of Securities Professionals Joyce Johnson Award, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Living Legacy Award.
