Technology Focus Areas

Takeda Canada is looking for innovative or disruptive solutions with the potential to improve the IBD patient and/or health care provider experience during key phases of the patient journey:

Therapy Decision

  • Solutions that enable earlier identification of patients who are likely to experience IBD flares/ require therapy escalation
  • Platforms that facilitate effective communication between patients and HCPs, including therapeutic choice discussions and joint decision making

Therapy Initiation

  • Solutions that expedite and improve the process of navigating reimbursement for IBD treatments

Treatment Optimization

  • Solutions that enable personalized treatment plans or optimizing therapy response based on individual needs

Ongoing Management

  • Solutions that support patients in monitoring and understanding their symptoms, empowering them to play a more active role in care planning

Takeda Canada is interested in integrated and personalized care through artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), telehealth, remote monitoring, patient segmentation for personalization of care, sensing and wearables, capture/analysis of patient reported outcomes and other solutions that meet the challenge criteria.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicants should be capable of executing a proof-of-concept project that demonstrates a measurable impact in one of the technology focus areas listed above, and is deliverable within the Canadian healthcare ecosystem in the near term (<12months)

What can you win?

  • Each selected finalist will have an opportunity to pitch their solution to Takeda
  • Each selected winner will be eligible to receive a challenge award, consisting of:
  • $10,000 CAD Cash Prize; and,
  • The opportunity to participate in Plug and Play Alberta’s Fall 2023 Accelerator Program (Sept 6 – Nov 30)
  • Each selected winner will also have the potential to further explore funding from Takeda to build a proof-of-concept project

Finalists present their solutions to a jury of Takeda medical and business leaders to select the award winner(s). Jury deliberations are expected to be completed within 3 weeks of the pitch event.


About Plug and Play Alberta

Plug and Play Alberta is building a world-class innovation platform to attract top technology and investment to the region and support Albertan entrepreneurs to scale and grow, hire tech talent, and propel digital transformation across the province. Plug and Play is part of the Alberta Scaleup and Growth Accelerator Program that is run by a consortium led by Alberta Innovates. The consortium, which also includes Alberta Technology and Innovation, Edmonton Unlimited, the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund, and Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), allocated $35 million over three years to retain business accelerators. It’s part of the Alberta government’s goal to help create 20,000 jobs and increase technology firm revenue to $5 billion by 2030.
