HIV/AIDS Situation in Nigeria
The HIV epidemic affects a large number of people in Nigeria, with more than 3.4 million living with HIV/AIDS and a prevalence rate among adults of 3.7%, one of the highest in the world. It is a complex epidemic that varies widely by region. Youth and young adults are particularly vulnerable to HIV, with young women at higher risk than young men.
Progress is however being made, and since 2008 a significant reduction has occurred.Still, a key challenge is extending access and coverage of HIV services to rural communities.Services also need to be broadened to include gender-sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care and support interventions for adults and children. This broader approach is expected to yield high impact and a more sustained effect on the prevalence rate in Nigeria.

Takeda supports a project to scale up community-based treatment, care and support which is being conducted by various groups, including several Nigerian NGOs, with financial assistance from the Global Fund. This project aims to develop and strengthen the capacities of local NGOs, youth organizations and residential groups so that patients can receive treatment in their own communities. Their staff are also receiving training in home care and education related to elimination of discrimination and provision of care for orphans.
