34 Intellectual property activities are vital to our ability to contribute to society as a provider of outstanding pharmaceutical products The Four Central Themes of Intellectual Property Activities Well over 10 years is needed for the R&D process that extends from drug discovery to final approval of a new pharmaceutical product. Furthermore, despite the enormous expenditures required to develop drugs, only a very small percentage of compounds reach the market. Drugs that are approved for sale in most cases are protected by a substance patent, which covers the drug's active ingredient. This patent is critical to the R&D process. Prospects for obtaining a patent can even be the deciding factor in whether or not to proceed with the development of a product. Without sufficient intellectual property, companies would be unable to generate the earnings needed for drug developmen

Over the past few years, the number of reported cases of counterfeit products has doubled. In 2008, about 500 consignments of counterfeit drugs were blocked for entry at Japanese customs, which has surged five times since 2006. Meanwhile, counterfeit products are becoming i
