Takeda Achieves Zero Emissions at its Plants in Japan

Osaka, Japan, June 2, 2010 - Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (“Takeda”) announced today that in fiscal 2009 it achieved zero emissions at the Osaka and Hikari Plants, two of its key production bases in Japan. Both plants began their initiatives to reduce and recycle waste over a period of four years from fiscal 2007, and have attained the goal one year ahead of the original schedule for the end of fiscal 2010.

Takeda’s fundamental stance on waste management is to reduce the amount of waste for final disposal by introducing production processes with little environmental impact to shop floors and promoting the recycling of waste through alliances with businesses from different industrial sectors, in addition to curtailing the amount of waste generated. Through such efforts, we aim to contribute to the creation of a recycling-oriented society.

With a view towards promoting reuse of supplies and equipment that are idle at production lines and other places of business, this fiscal year Takeda launched the Net Sharing System^[*1], thus driving forward its commitment to waste reduction.

Designed to encourage employees to increase their environmental awareness and form the habit of minimizing waste production.

<Zero emissions: Definition and target indices>

To reduce the final percentage sent to landfills to 0.5% or below, increase the percentage recycled to 90% or higher, and reduce the amount sent directly to landfills to zero by fiscal 2010, thus achieving a recycling rate^[*2] of 99% or higher
