Takeda Submitted an Application for an Additional Indication for
Takepron® Capsules 15 and Takepron® OD Tablet 15 in Japan for new indications
regarding Prevention of NSAIDs-Associated Gastric Ulcer/Duodenal Ulcer

Osaka, Japan, November 25, 2009 --- Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (“Takeda”) today announced it has submitted a supplemental new drug application to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labour in Japan for Takepron® Capsules 15 and Takepron® OD Tablet 15 (generic name: lansoprazole) in Japan for new indications regarding Prevention of NSAIDs[*]-Associated Gastric Ulcer/Duodenal Ulcer.

Discovered by Takeda, lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor which was launched in Japan in 1992, with the already approved indications including gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and reflux esophagitis.

NSAIDs are mainly prescribed for the treatment of pain, fever and inflammation, while they are known to be associated with the adverse reactions of gastric and duodenal ulcers. In this respect, it is important to avoid onset of such peptic ulcers of those patients especially with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis who are not recommended to discontinue the treatment with NSAIDs because of potential serious deterioration of quality of life.

Takeda anticipates this additional indication will provide a necessary new treatment option for patients under long-term treatment with NSAIDs to prevent the onset of gastric ulcers. Takeda will continue the development of Takepron as a treatment option for acid-related diseases for the benefit of patients.
