Terumo and Takeda to Co-promote Takeda’s Ethical Narcotic Formulations

Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, September 3, 2009 - Terumo Corporation (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President: Akira Takahashi, “Terumo”) and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Osaka; President: Yasuchika Hasegawa, “Takeda”) announced jointly today that the two companies will commence in coming October the co-promotion of ethical narcotic formulations that Takeda is manufacturing and marketing in Japan.

Living up to its corporate slogan of “Terumo’s unique technology makes medical treatment kinder and gentler,” Terumo has made a full-scale entry into the pain relief market for patients of cancer and other diseases, and has set up a task force with twenty members in order to conduct marketing research and education on the proper use of drugs. Terumo would like to pursue the opportunities which will spring forth from its unique strategic approach of relieving the pain of patients.

Takeda has positioned oncology as one of its core therapeutic areas, and it is now expanding the R&D pipeline in that area, as well as enhancing the functions such as research, development, and sales marketing capability globally. In domestic market, Takeda is promoting usage of pain relief therapies for patients with cancer, through manufacturing and marketing of ethical narcotic formulations.

With the two companies co-promoting ethical narcotic formulations which are used for patients with cancer as pain relievers, both parties believe that the medical and scientific information on the relevant products can be shared with an even greater number of healthcare providers so that both companies can further contribute to the pain relieve treatment for patients with cancer.
