Takeda Announces Basic Strategies for Expansion into India

October 1, 2010, Osaka, Japan --- Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (“Takeda”) today announced its basic plan with medium- to long-term strategies for business expansion to India, including those for a variety of functions such as sales & marketing, research, development, CMC(*), manufacturing and IT.

Takeda positions the period covered by the 2010-2012 Mid-Range Plan as a time of transformation for Takeda in order to ensure sustainable growth for the future, with the Vision of focusing on Innovation, Culture, and Growth. The basic plan consists of the strategies for expanding the Takeda group’s presence in India which is and will be one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical markets. At the same time, Takeda will pursue innovation, productivity and cost-effectiveness as a whole within Takeda group, by leveraging world-class capabilities at competitive costs in research, development, CMC, toll-manufacturing services, and IT services that India offers. The company will implement these strategies steadily, which is expected to contribute to the accomplishment of the Mid-Range Plan and transformation into a New Takeda.

Expansion of the Takeda group’s presence in India
  • •Pursuit of alliance with local pharmaceutical companies for earliest possible launch, penetration, and maximizing the value of Takeda’s innovative and life-saving products.
  • •Intensive feasibility studies for all possible options to construct the business infrastructure to enable future sustainable growth.
Pursuit of innovation, productivity and cost-effectiveness

Concrete strategies to be implemented gradually starting this October in each function.

  • •Research: Outsourcing of medicinal chemistry and other areas.
  • •Development: Increased clinical trial activities and outsourcing of clinical data processing.
  • •CMC: Outsourcing of manufacturing and analytical methods development for active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug formulations.
  • •Manufacturing: Feasibility study for sourcing of raw materials, intermediates and active ingredients, and toll-manufacturing of Takeda’s products for Indian market and also for other emerging markets.
  • •IT: Utilization of external vendors for operations and applications development for IT infrastructure.

Takeda will establish a legal entity in Mumbai by January 2011 in order to support the above strategies by; ensuring immediate access to updated information on the Indian market and environment surrounding it including laws and regulations, promoting alliances with local companies, and also the outsourcing processes of each function aforementioned.
