With the increasing availability of health data in many low- and middle-income countries, there is a growing opportunity for machine learning to significantly impact public health. However, approximately only 22% of artificial intelligence professionals being women globally, the data science models developed are dominated by men and are subject to implicit and explicit biases in machine learning algorithms and these biases are being codified into how data are interpreted. The pioneering project, ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise (ENGAGE) seeks to establish a public health-focused machine learning training program for girls and young women to reduce the gender-based gaps and biases in data science and help strengthen the leadership pipeline and impact of women to improve health in their communities. The program will not only help train adolescent girls and young women in Kenya in data science, but also empower and provide career mentorship for them to write the code that influences how health policy and decisions are made about their health.
